Occupation – Colonization
19 March 2024
Mayor’s Residence

4th Memorial of Silence opinion forum

If we were to identify the darkest days in our country’s history, 15 March 1939 would hold “honorable mention” among them. The proclamation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia came as a sudden break in our history, but Nazi Germany’s takeover and occupation of the Czech lands had been systematically planned and prepared in advance.

What are some of the lesser known circumstances surrounding the March events eighty-five years ago?
What made the rapid implementation of the Nuremberg laws and censorship in the protectorate possible? How thoroughly had the Third Reich prepared for taking over Czech industry and colonizing the occupied territories?
With what force did Nazi propaganda strike, and what characteristics of this mental war remain present in the conflicts we see today?

The opinion forum presented the viewpoints of people from various disciplines, who attempted to place this important anniversary within the broader context.

Accepting our invitation to participate in the discussion were: historians Petr Hlaváček, Petr Koura, Petr Bednařík, and Petr Placák; historian and economist Antonie Doležalová; psychologist Martin Mahler; and journalist Lucie Korcová.

Moderator: Karolína Koubová

The discussion can be viewed online at Czech Television’s iVysílání streaming site.
